You might be a tweet-a-holic if…

So you’re a part of the online community called twitter. Hmm? Yeah? And you’re finally getting pretty good at tweeting and replies and DM’s and making url’s tiny, etc. Right? But now there’s something else that’s happened that you weren’t really expecting – and you didn’t even know the potential existed that this could happen to you, quite frankly. And the truth is you’ve never been one given to addictions (like some other people you know) except now it’s you that’s gotten hooked. It’s you! And you’re addicted to/can’t live without twitter. (Is there a 12-step program somewhere to help?) And you just might be a tweet-a-holic if…

#1: your last intimate conversation with your husband/wife was about your latest tweet.

#2: you’re referring to/thinking of people by their tweet names instead of their real names.

#3: you’re thinking about your next tweet(s) while you’re jogging/exercising.

#4: you’re writing down future tweets during a seminar at work.

#5: you’re neglecting other important duties because you’re tweeting so much.

#6: your emails are now done in tweet format (140 characters or less, lower case, etc.).

#7: you’re very concerned with how many are following you versus how many are following somebody else.

#8: you get semi-depressed when someone unfollows you or when no one replies to your short, pithy tweet/saying.

#9: you are elated/your ego gets a boost when someone with more followers follows you first.

#10: the thought of going without twitter for even just one single, solitary day (check out @tweetfast) causes you to go into a withdrawal (“please, when/where can I get my next twitter fix?”).

#11: you’ve become a twitter evangelist – everyone you know you introduce them to twitter/tweeting.

#12: the bulk of your conversations when you’re not on twitter are about: _________ (fill in the blank). (Three choices: a. twitter; b. twitter; c. twitter).

So what do you think?…have anymore “you might be a tweet-a-holic if’s” to contribute?…send them my way…I might add to post?…oops There I go again showing signs of my own addiction?! 😉

  1. Good job! I agree with every one of these. I have actually experienced a few myself. Maybe you should also add- you know your a twitter-a-holic
if…. You actually post a blog about what makes you a twitter-a-holic. Thanks for the blog Mike.
    See ya in Twitterland!!!!

  2. Great post! And so true! I see myself for sure.

  3. 13. You have arguments with your significant O because of your tweets.

    14. You feel like you get the shakes if you’re not tweeting for an hour.

    15. Tweeting is the first thing you do (even before coffee) when you wake up and the last thing you do before you go to bed.

    🙂 Nice list!

  4. H yes, clearly I am addicted

  8. Ha! Great list.

    – your next mobile phone purchase hinges on the device’s Tweeting capabilities

    – you tweet from your phone while you’re on the toilet

    – you tweet to your spouse (who’s sitting beside you) instead of talking to them

  9. Yaaaaaaaaa….some day I will say all of these…i am sure…twitter is so good…

  10. Very long post, could you tweet the tiny url for us and stay at the 140 chr limit?

Not really, just kidding. Great post and it applies to blogging, chatting and gadget usage as well.

  11. Funny, knew someone would have to play off You know you are a redneck if….. sooner or later. Humor by the way is the most valued thing on Twitter, via twtpoll shaam!

  12. Oh yeah, I’m addicted!!! For sure… 🙂

  13. Twitter is a tool. It’s important to have goals with twitter or yes, you will fall into the trap of being addicted to it. Great post!

  14. I’ve only been twittering about two weeks, but think I am in danger of becoming addicted. I have all the signs!!

  15. Gosh, it’s true! The funny thing is… I have put Twitter on my facebook, myspace, blog & whatever I can, so others can get on Twitter too. I guess I would be considered a…Twitter pusher! Heaven, help me…lol Thanks for the article Mike. Appreciate it and God bless! I liked it!

  16. Fun post. But, really, I can stop anytime. Really. It’s not a problem. You’ll see.

  17. You’re in sad shape. As for me, I’m just a social Twitter; I can give it up any time I want to.

  18. Great fun – wonderfully funny. Thankfully I don’t tweet all that much. My problem is I Flickr.

  19. Awesome post – I tell my wife Twitter stories to which she replies I read it on facebook. –@meintwitter

  20. I’m not an addict, I’m a practitioner. It’s my job be on Twitter. So, nyah!

BTW, if people are TRUE addicts, they wouldn’t write down Tweets (as per #4), they would either be tweeting on their iPhone, or they set up TweetMail and are texting them via their cell phones.

  21. I see an addiction with twitter, it is much safer then an addiction say on pokie machines.

    God bless.

  22. Great post. My “dog” has a twitter account so he can connect with his “anipals.” When we have weekend events, fundraisers, and I’m online under his account, speaking in doggy language, it’s very difficult to make the transition BACK to normal! I find myself talking to my husband in my doggie language! My family, and probably you too, think I’ve lost my mind!

I assure you all, I have not! LOL

    Addicting, that is it!

  23. Hey Mike!!Nicely written and very true!

  24. Laurie, that was funny, your dog twittering and the transition back. I laughed so hard…LOL, Thanks and God bless!

  25. YIKES!!!!! Guilty as charged!

  26. You might be a tweet-a-holic if you read all the way to the end of a blog post about twitter addiction and then post a comment as well 🙂

  27. Uh Oh, I thought I left all the “habbit” stuff behind. I am a “tweekter”. Ok, first admit to myself and another person….

  28. So now I’ll go “tweet” about my comment here and retweet this post! I am sooo hopeless!

  29. Must be a tweet-a-holic. I think of Tweets I can print on T-shirts like – “Tweeting is not addictive I do it all the time!” “Change the world with twitter”. “twitters are fun people 140 characters or less.” “How did you tweet?” “Tweeting is theraputic.”
    I really believe it is.

  30. LOL….I guess I’m not a tweet-a-holic yet, since I just finished both my twitter blog (and) Facebook this am, but working on it

  31. nope, none of those! Pretty much the only thing I want to be addicted to is Jesus.

  32. Great post my friend. I think I might be becoming one. Not there just yet though! Just check out my latest twitter Limerick:

A tweeter who wanted to tweet
Felt that he was too indiscreet.
    But when he got hit
    And started to twit
    His updates were all incomplete!

    Keep posting: http://www.gags-and-games.4t.com/thegameblog.html

  33. WHEW! I’m safe.

Wonder how the late night comics would dissect this blog post? grin

    Very cute. Thanks!

  34. It’s true. I confess to all of it and more. I even dream about those special Tweeters that I especially admire, and yes, it is the Twitter name that’s in my head, not their real name. It’s an addiction!
Do I want to be delivered? No! they lift my faith, challenge me, inspire me and add value to my life in Christ. (Confessions of a true Tweet-a-holic)

  36. I am absolutely a tweet-a-holic… And I dont care! 🙂

  37. Hi Pastor Mike I wanted to say more in my tweer to you but you can’t type to much in that box. Just imagine if people “tweeted” in real life like at the mall or at church. I never thought I would be on Twitter but I’m on here to network my home business. The internet has changed everything and I miss the good ol’ days when people actually spent time with each other.

  38. Who jogs??? Who exercises???

I’ve been known to Tweet too much, but am learning to be swift to read, slow to tweet, and slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

  39. Oh my! LMBO! I’m not *that* bad, but I’m getting there!

  40. Pastor Mike…Oh how so true!
    Guilty, Guilty, Guilty.
Lord, Please forgive after this last Tweet…
Bless you Pastor Mike ..Please keep checking ME right where I AM.

  41. I, too, am guilty. *Love* Twitter. HA!

  42. You know you are addicted when a bad day constitutes having Tweetdeck go down.

… When you start talking like you tweet.

… When you check your twitter messages before your voice mail.

  43. Okay, I wish I could plead the fifth, but let me add one. If your tweets come through on your black berry phone. My phone drives my husband crazy and I have to keep it on vibrate most of the time. How bad is that.

  44. if you sleep with your blackberry next to you!

  45. LOL. I am not totally hooked, maybe half baked. Half apply. Love some of the comments. You have funny readers.

  46. LOL! Too cute!

  47. you might be a tweet-a-holic if….. you pull away from a long red light, and it dawns on you that you wasted an opportunity to check your twitter stream.

  48. tweet

  49. My name is Colleen and I’m a tweet-a-holic.

    Add: You dream in tweets.

  50. Well..Actually I’m not addicted to twitter. Just because i talk about tweeting doesn’t mean I have a problem. Talking about twitter, and tweeting are two different things. After all I hold down a full time job and pay my bills…I don’t hurt anyone..and who are you to judge? After all isn’t this America? I might be a functioning Tweeter on Twitter but I’m not hurting anyone. Call me a Happy Tweeter if you must, but don’t judge me and say I’m a twitter addict…after all I can stop anytime I want…LOL..hahaha!! I’m hooked on twitter is that the same as addicted? ..Lol

  51. This is classic; so true!

  52. Is there a difference between being an addict and doing something a lot?

Do we pray a lot? Are we addicted to prayer?

Should we be, or does that level of obsession turn prayer into idolatry.

Maybe we should discuss this. I think it might be an error to criticise people for doing something a lot when it’s what they do.

Yes, it’s possible to tweet (or do drugs, or read, or watch MTV, or have sex, or play video games, or hang out for pizza with friends from church) to the point where it distracts us from what we should be doing.

But if Twitter had been around 2,000 years ago, I’d like to hope our predecessors would have been aware enough to saturate it with their involvement in relationships, to have a chance at sharing the gospel.

  53. Oh yes if our Lord Jesus was on Twitter he would have not need his disciple he would follow everybody!!! I am a Twitter a holic I worry whether I have DM and go on a high when I ahve a new follower ha!!!

  54. – If you update every insignificant event in your life (e.g. brushing my teeth…).

  55. You know you’re a Twitterholic when you learn about news through Twitter. Michael Jackson’s passing,Tiger Woods scandal, Haiti earthquake–I heard about all of them on Twitter first.

You know you’re a Twitterholic when it’s more fun to view certain events (like awards shows) through others’ Tweets, rather than watching yourself.

    I heart Twitter. Thanks for sharing…on Twitter. : )

  56. I’ll be honest I’m not a twitter addict yet… I’m just starting to see the potential of it.

    Thanks!

  59. Love this post! Funny, but true 🙁 About the “thinking of what to tweet while jogging” part… I would like to add: “stopping every other block while jogging to tweet.” 😀

  60. i really appreciate it

  61. i really appreciate it

  62. i really appreciate it

  63. Great stuff!

  64. I do show a few one! in 2 months i have kind of developed a tweet addiction! Excellent post!

  65. Yep,I am guilty of most of these and more! I do try to use twitter to build a relationship and encourage followers to my blog. I strive to send encouraging (or humorous)tweets.
I really got addicted when I went to a women’s blog conference and learned abt hashtags!
Great post, think I’ll retweet, lol!

  66. Since I spend a couple of hours a day tweeting, I must be an twitaddict. But I am in denial.

  67. I read an article the other day on Yahoo. The gist was this: “If a tree falls down in the forest and nobody tweets about it, did it really happen?”

The story was about Bill Nye (the science guy) who was lecturing to an audience of college students. When he collapsed on stage, none of the students thought to render aid. They were too busy tweeting what had just happened.

So there’s #13. You might be a twitter-holic if tweeting comes before human life. Ouch.

  68. Interesting post…

  69. Yah, I’ve got all these, but I’m a new user and I’m sure I’ll get better after the newness wears off… at least that’s what I keep telling myself. Thanks pastor. God bless.

SEE FOR YOUR SELF EVEN THE EARLY 3 CENTURIES & DISCIPLES OF JESUS DID NOT CELEBRATE THE BIRTHDAY OF CHRIST AS IT WAS THE CUSTOM OF PHAROAH [PHIRON]/ GENTILES AND DEMON GODS-

  71. You caught me. I did a few on your list. Thanks for the insight. Be blessedi

  72. Good reckoning! I am already on the path.

  73. Twitterland is doing a great job with subtle side effects. Thanks for pointing them out in this blog!

  74. This article protrays your experience with twitter! Congratulations.

  75. Looked at the list. Think its great. No. Haven’t gotten sucked in that much yet–I think–but dangers may loom on the horizon. stay tuned

  76. That’s OK. I help people to fight with gay addiction with a blessing. Communication, discovering myself it is the brand new opportunities. But sure, we need to balance life with positive energy as well.

  77. This made me laugh at myself. ^^,

  78. Krobinson910 says

Not a-holic yet. But you know what can happen if you experiment! Keep up the Good work!

  79. Godslilgirl143 says

Wee,I can relate w/ some signs.I seldom tweet coz I don’t have a personal PC but I think I’m somehow showing signs of being a “twitter-a-holic”-how much more if I have my own computer?I write on my mini notebook thoughts/quotes I’m going to tweet next time I go to the internet cafe.Almost in every interesting thing I do I think of “Woah, this is nice to tweet!” I somehow consider tweeting like writing a journal but not all things since twitter can be read by the whole world. =D

  80. Being somewhat a recluse.

Twitter has really opened up a whole new way to interact with people.

    Not quite a Twitter addict.
But it sure is a great way of spreading the Good News!

  81. Since I just started “twitting,” I guess I don’t fall under the category of “twitter addict.” However, I find myself twitting more than the minimum, 3-5 twitts. It’s a lot of fun, though especially when you see twitters for God’s epistle!!!

  82. Thanks for sharing this….so much fun! Yes, I fear I am addicted. Though not all the time. I enjoyed reading these signs of addiction. Have a blessed Easter!

  83. I didn’t even know what a hashtag was a few months ago and now I’m on Twitter everyday…although I don’t think I’m a full blown tweet-a-holic just yet 😉

    Thanks for sharing!

  84. Great job! 🙂 My first thought was…who is this Mike and how did he get inside my head??? lol

  85. It’s so very true. I’m def a tweetaholoic. lol

  86. wow! I’m amazed. It seems like i really am becoming a tweet-a-holic… but then, I have to discipline myself. Classes are about to start and more important things should be dealt with before going to twitter. 🙂

  87. @WhoDoUServe says

Love this… new to twitter… still trying to figure it out… sure some of these at least will be me.. lol

  88. Great post. I recognize myself in many of these.

  89. WHAT IF YOU HAVE 2 ON LINE PLACES.. TWITTER AND FACEBOOK? YIKES! BIGGEST PROBLEM/ START TO WRITE IN TWITTER LANGUAGE/ ABBREVIATIONS… OH, HOW DID I GET INTO THIS? 🙂
    CHERITHLYNN

  90. I would like to become a twitter evangelist, since that’s a useful way to spread the good news, and, in particular, new thoughts about the good news. I’m recommending my articles I publish at Faithwriters (and Faithreaders). Thanks for the opportunity to share my view here.:-)

  91. Thanks for sharing, pastor Mike. Interesting read. Pls pray for me that God uses this (my) addiction so more people are exposed to Him and the truth of His word…for His glory. =)

  92. Not yet!! I’m still a facebook-holic! Haha

  93. And.. How about you? 🙂

  94. ROFL!!! Omigoodness! Brilliant! I am so guilty of #2: you’re referring to/thinking of people by their tweet names instead of their real names.

I noticed the date of the post, so I am going to tweet it now so others can see it!

  95. If you always write interesting, I will be your regular reader. skin care
