Entering the Valley of Humiliation

Journey to the Celestial City #31. In our continuing look at John Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress,” today we find the man, Christian, finally taking leave of the good ladies’ house. As he’s departing, Discretion and her sisters take care to accompany him to the bottom of the hill. There Christian is to enter a valley called “Humiliation.” He will feel the full force of it. And Christianity and following Jesus really is an engagement with humility/humbling. I wonder if it’s been forgotten in some corners of the church (especially in America?). “‘A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. It is enough for the disciple that he become as his teacher, and the slave as his master.'” (Matthew 10:24-25) “And being found in appearance as a man, He [Christ] humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:8) More to come in the next blog post.
