Journey to the Celestial City #40. In our continuing look at John Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress,” today we find the man, Christian – quite frankly, this Valley of the Shadow of Death has just been an all-consuming and burdensome trudge. And it continues still! Except now the dawn has broken and the good man with his own eyes can consider his torments. They are as awful in the light as they were in the dark: “the ditch … and the quag … the hob-goblins, and satyrs, and dragons of the pit.” But these Christian leaves behind as the second part of the Valley he now approaches. It’s more dangerous than the first?! Indeed, it is chock “full of snares, traps, gins, and nets … pits, pitfalls, deep holes, and shelvings down there,” let alone “Pope” and “Pagan” are waiting yet further. And what of the many dangers Christ has seen us (you) through? He is our light in the darkness. And without Him we’d have been lost long ago, but by His grace we are being kept. “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper.” (Isaiah 54:17; KJV) “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105; KJV) “But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.” (Job 23:10; KJV) More to come in the next blog post.
