Twitter Followers and Following Jesus

In celebration of my third anniversary on Twitter (today~send presents), I wanted to talk about followers and following. That’s what Twitter is all about. Right? It’s all about followers and following. Be honest. You’ve wondered (at least once) about how many followers you have versus somebody else. (“Not me, Pastor Mike.” If that’s your answer, you’re lying.) How do I know? Point blank, I’ve wondered it. When I first started out I saw Chris Brogan had 40,000 followers and Mari Smith had 20,000 and I said, “I’m gonna be like them.” Well, not quite. Chris has 190,000+ and Mari has 110,000+. 60,000 isn’t so bad. (And fyi, it’s harder getting followers as a Christian. The gospel divides.)

And there are just a whole lot of similarities between following on Twitter and following Jesus. The analogy works. It really does. It’s what I’d like to drill in on.

I mean,

Start out following, then unfollow for an unknown reason
Start out following, get mad at you, then unfollow
Start out following, misunderstand you, then unfollow
Committed followers over the long haul
Intimate followers/friends, stick with you through thick and thin
