Let me begin by saying just because they’re in the pulpit doesn’t mean they know everything. And even some of the most prominent and respected Christian ministers and leaders get it wrong sometimes. (You can say, “Amen.”)
I recently heard it said, “The reason why God made man was because He was lonely.” Huh? God was lonely? Oh really?
Think about it. First of all, if You are God you don’t need anything. Right? You are fully adequate in Yourself apart from all else. You are fully self-contained. You are fully self-supporting. You are fully self-sustaining, etc. Everything emanates (gets its start, has its beginning) in You. You are the reason for everything else. To be God presupposes You have no needs. (Selah ~ pause to reflect)
And even if God could be lonely, that’s silly again. Because God was never alone. He is never alone. And He will never be alone ~ whether man exists or not. He has the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. These “Three” have enjoyed complete and perfect communion and fellowship long before the world began. And long after the world is gone, “They” will be together in all holiness and virtue and beauty. The Trinity itself disproves the “loneliness of God” idea.
And so why did God make man (and woman) if it wasn’t to keep Him from feeling lonely? Do you know the answer? It’s really quite simple.
God is a giver. It’s God’s nature to give. His whole Being is consumed with giving. (John 3:16) It isn’t a “need” of God to give. It’s just who He is.
And so God created man (and woman) so that He could give Himself to him (and her).
No, my friends, it isn’t God who needs us. It’s us who need God.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1)
