(What follows is a response to a question I was asked via social media.)
And let me just cut to the chase.
Suicide IS a sin, but NOT an unforgivable sin. It is no worse than any other sin especially the ones we tend to minimize in our own lives (like gossip, etc.).
Samson committed suicide (Judges 16:30) and he’s recognized in Hebrews 11, the “Hall of Faith” chapter.
I put in caps below what just may be a reference to Samson’s greatest “faith event” (in my humble opinion) as his life ended and he pulled down the pillars killing 3,000 Philistines…
“32 And what more shall I say? For time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, SAMSON, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets, 33 who by faith conquered kingdoms, performed acts of righteousness, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, FROM WEAKNESS WERE MADE STRONG, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.” (Hebrews 11:32-34)
Only God knows a person’s heart. Do we lose our salvation in a moment of weakness, even if that weakness is suicide? I don’t think so. God is a merciful Judge. Jesus said, “It is finished!” at the cross. It is not by our works that we are saved, but by His. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
