Pastor Mike here to answer the question: “Was Jesus a liberal or a conservative?:
So what do you think?
In Part 1 of this teaching I suggested our Lord was a conservative and I pointed out His conservative tendencies.
And then in Part 2 I turned it around and said Jesus was a liberal and pointed out His liberal tendencies.
And now in Part 3 I’m repenting of my schizophrenia to give you a definitive answer as regards Christ’s politics.
And the way I want to do it is with His “Parable of the Children in the Marketplace” in Matthew chapter 11, verse 16-19.
And let me just simplify it for you.
(You can read on your own later.)
Jesus is looking for a way to describe humankind in His time while on earth.
And so He draws the picture of children playing in the marketplace or public square is how the Living Bible translates it.
And no matter what song these children sing for certain of the other kids they’re playing with, the other kids don’t like it.
The happy songs don’t make them happy.
And the sad songs don’t make them sad.
And so it is with our Lord’s generation, Jesus goes on, and their receiving of God and the messengers He sends.
When John the Baptist shows up in a conservative fashion neither eating or drinking, the people say, “He couldn’t be sent by God, could he?”
And then when Jesus shows up in a liberal fashion, eating and drinking and with the worst of sinners no less, the people say, “He couldn’t be sent by God either.”
The happy songs don’t make them happy.
And the sad songs don’t make them sad.
And when John the Baptist and Jesus were sent by God still certain ones refuse to believe.
And so the answer now and finally to the question: “Was Jesus a Liberal or a Conservative?”…
He was a conservative! (John the Baptist being another example of it.)
And He was a liberal!
Christ was the best of both while leaving out the worst.
