6TH SEAL OF THE APOCALYPSE

I want to talk about the 6th seal of the Apocalypse today.

It’s written about in Revelation chapter 6, verse 12 through 17.

It reads…

12 When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, 

13 and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. 

14 The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

15 Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, 

16 calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb,

 17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” 

And so we have the description of the 6th seal of the Apocalypse.

SEAL JUDGMENTS TYPIFY THE ENTIRETY OF THE NEW TESTAMENT PERIOD

And it comes on the heels of seals 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 which we’ve previously discussed in other videos, the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, Tyranny, War, Famine, Death with Hades following and the Martyrs.

And I’ve laid the ground work that each of the seal judgments take place during the period of time that extends from Christ’s ascension up until the time of Christ’s second coming.

And they typify what is happening among humankind.

But the 6th seal is different than the previous five.

INTERPRETATION OF THE 6TH SEAL OF THE APOCALYPSE

And the Lamb of God, Christ Himself, opens the 6th seal and what does the Apostle John see?

The end of the world in all its fury and devastation.

A great earthquake takes place.

The sun becomes black as sackcloth.

The full moon becomes like blood.

The stars fall to earth.

The sky vanishes.

The mountains and islands are removed from their places.

And kings, great ones, generals, those who have lots of money, those who have lots of power, slaves, free men hide themselves because they know the judgment of “the great day” has arrived.

DR. LOUIS BRIGHTON ON THE 6TH SEAL OF THE APOCALYPSE

In his popular commentary on the Book of Revelation, Dr. Louis Brighton says it this way…

“With the opening of the sixth seal John receives a visionary scene in which is depicted the end of all things, together with the preceding and accompanying cosmic disturbances. …In the gospel of Mark Jesus says that all these cosmic disturbances will precede and attend his coming at the end of the world (Mk 13:24-27; cf. Mt 24:29-31; Lk 21:25-28).

When this cosmic, earthquake-like shaking hits the earth as the mountains and islands begin to move and disappear, the peoples of the earth will be struck with a terror and a hopelessness that staggers the imagination and surpasses any horror yet experienced by humanity. …All who did not heed the call to repentance and the invitation of the Gospel of the victorious Lamb will attempt to flee in terror. But there is no place to hide from the presence of the almighty God (cf. Gen 3:8-10).” (pg 119-120)

DR. PAUL KRETZMANN ON THE 6TH SEAL OF THE APOCALYPSE

Dr. Paul Kretzmann in his popular commentary on the entire Bible including the Book of Revelation, adds…

“On the last great day the defiant authority of the proud rulers of the world, of kings and mighty ones and generals, will sink into the dust, and they will seek respite and deliverance like the lowest of their subjects. Then all the wealth of the earth will not buy salvation, and the strength of a thousand oxen will not effect escape. Then the slaves and the freemen will be on the same level, and no man will think of social distinctions. And they all, filled with unspeakable dread, will cower in abject terror and fly to the crags and caves of the mountains, vainly hoping to find a spot where the angry glances of the holy God will not strike them, where the wrath of the Lamb, whose sacrifice [of dying on the cross for their sins] they rejected in their unbelief, will not find them.”

Dr. Kretzmann concludes…

“That is what the breaking of the sixth seal uncovered: the terrors of the godless world on the day of the Judgment of God. Only the Christians, certain of the atonement of Christ which they have accepted by faith, will rejoice on that day, knowing that their redemption is nigh.”

WHAT THE 6TH SEAL OF THE APOCALYPSE IS

And so we have the 6th seal of the Apocalypse.

It’s the end of the world that John sees in all its fury and devastation.

It is accompanied by cosmic disturbances never seen by man.

All who did not repent will scatter in terror.
