7 SIGNS OF THE GOSPEL OF JOHN: WATER TURNED TO WINE

Pastor Mike here.

(This is Part 1 of the seven signs of the Gospel of John where we’re considering the first sign: Water Turned To Wine.)

The Holy Spirit gave to the Apostle John the words of his Gospel account surrounding the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

JOHN’S GOSPEL CONSTRUCTED AROUND SEVEN MIRACLES

One of the ways John constructed his Gospel is around seven signs (or miracles) that our Lord performed.

The first of the seven signs is found in John chapter 2, verse 1 through 11 where it reads…

1 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.

3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”

4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.

8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.

9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom

10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”

11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

And so we have the first sign of the seven signs of the Gospel of John: Water Turned To Wine.

WATER TURNED TO WINE

And there are many things we could talk about exegeting this passage in John chapter 2.

But instead, I just want to drill down and focus on the sign/miracle of turning water to wine itself.

And let me just remind you of the main point of the seven signs of the Gospel of John.

John himself gives it to us in John chapter 20, verse 30-31…

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these (the seven signs of the Gospel of John) are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

And so the signs are meant to be convincing proof that Jesus is the Messiah promised from the Garden of Eden that God would send to die in your place on the cross so that you would be saved from your sins and have eternal life.

Now it’s not that a magician couldn’t make water the color red with chemicals and then change it back again.

But the fusion energy that it actually would take to turn one gallon of water to one gallon of wine, and I want you to picture this — it would cause a crater one half mile long.

Doing the math that would mean “six stone water jars … holding twenty or thirty gallons” each. (John 2:6)

6 times 20 equals 120 gallons.

6 times 30 equals 180 gallons.

And so the fusion energy that it would take to turn the same amount of water to the same amount of wine in the miracle that Jesus does — it would cause a crater between 60 and 90 miles long.

And the Son of God just does it — poof!

CLIFF LEWIS PHD ON THE SCIENCE OF JESUS’ MIRACLE IN JOHN 2

In his article, The Science of Jesus’ Miracle in John 2, Cliff Lewis PhD writes…

…[B]y changing water into wine Jesus demonstrated his authority over even the atomic structure of atoms by commanding oxygen and hydrogen atoms to disassemble and reform into other atoms of different configurations. The amount of energy it would take to perform this atomic deconstruction and reconstruction is staggering. This intermolecular energy being released is the source of the explosive energy from an atomic bomb. …And [Christ] accomplished it with no physical exertion.

Lewis concludes…

With this single act Jesus proves that the basic forces in nature are at his command and control. Certainly one who controls the basic forces in nature controls all of nature, thus Jesus truly revealed his complete control of the physical universe through this act.

THE SEVEN SIGNS ARE CONVINCING PROOF THAT JESUS IS THE MESSIAH

And let me just say it again.

This first sign, water turned to wine, along with the other six signs of the Gospel of John that we’ll be studying going forward, they are meant to be convincing proof that Jesus is the Messiah promised from the Garden of Eden that God would send to die in your place on the cross so that you would be saved from your sins and have eternal life.
