QUESTION: HOW DO WE RECONCILE THE GOSPEL RESURRECTION ACCOUNTS?

Pastor Mike here.

I’m answering questions about the Bible.

The question today is: How do we reconcile the Gospel resurrection accounts?

HOW MANY WOMEN?

I mean, when it comes to how many women came to Jesus’ tomb on Easter Sunday:

Mark has 3.

Matthew has 2.

Luke has 3 plus others.

John has 1 (Mary Magdalene).

HOW MANY ANGELS?

And when it comes to how many angels were involved:

Mark has 1.

Matthew has 1.

Luke has 2.

John has 2.

WHO DID THE WOMEN TELL?

And then as it has to do with who did the women tell what happened:

Mark says “they said nothing to anyone.”

Matthew says they “ran to report it to His disciples.”

Luke says they “reported all these things to the eleven and to the rest.”

John says Mary Magdalene told Peter and the disciple whom Jesus loved.

John also says she came later “announcing to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord.'”

And there are other differences in the Gospel resurrection accounts.

DIFFERENCES HIGHLIGHT AUTHENTICITY

But to answer the question, How do we reconcile them?

First of all, it’s a sign the stories are authentic that there are differences.

If they were exactly the same, you would think they met together to get their story straight.

MAIN POINTS ARE ALL THE SAME

And then second of all, and yet the main points of the Gospel resurrection accounts are all the same.

Jesus was crucified, died, and then was buried on Good Friday.

But His tomb was empty on Easter Sunday.

He had risen.

Hallelujah!
